Hollywood Villains
Whether you love to hate them or just outright hate them, it’s clear to see that some characters are utterly irredeemable. From being cruel to being outright annoying, here are the 20 most hated characters around.
1. Dolores Umbridge
Often picked as one of the most hated characters around, there’s a lot that makes her worse than Voldemort. Unlike the main villain, she really didn’t have any redeeming qualities, and the fact that she hates kids probably doesn’t help her being in a family movie.
2. Judge Claude Frollo
Considered one of Disney’s edgiest movies, The Hunchback of Notre Dame’s premier villain is Judge Claude Frollo, who thinks himself a pious man but does much evil in the name of the church. Not only is he super creepy toward Esmeralda, but he’s also heartless and controlling of Quasimodo.
3. Denethor
You might think the biggest villain in Lord of the Rings is Sauron, but it’s actually Denethor. This unhinged father is so biased toward his son that he’s willing to burn one alive just because he can’t live up to his perfect aspirations.
4. Yon-Suk
In the titular zombie movie Train to Busan, Yon-Suk is clearly a self-serving and cowardly businessman. He’s prepared to sacrifice others for his own survival and shows that the rich and entitled don’t plan on letting zombies get them down.
5. Nurse Ratched
With a name like that, it’s no surprise the nurse was so cruel and heartless. In 1975’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Louise Fletcher plays the nightmarish Nurse Ratched who uses her power and control to punish and torment her patients.
6. Mrs. Carmody
The Mist is known for that one terrible scene, but before any of that happens, Mrs. Carmody comes out as a true villain. An outright fear monger, she is the biggest threat in a movie full of literal monsters.
7. Biff Tannen
Biff is certainly one of those characters you simply love to hate. The generational villain in Back to the Future, Biff is always around causing trouble one way or another. He’s a bit dim-witted, which makes him laughable as he tries to torment Marty McFly.
8. Cal Hockley
Playing the villain of Titanic, there are many reasons to hate Cal. First of all, he’s a representation of classist cruelty and entitlement. Not to mention, he’s pretty manipulative toward Rose and is always putting her down. Finally, he’s a bit selfish, claiming a child just to safely get off board.
9. Veruca Salt
In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Veruca stands as a lesson to watching kids about the dangers of entitlement. Her rotten behavior leads her to cause trouble and chaos for others as she demands everything in sight.
10. Marla Grayson
In this Netflix original movie, Rosamund Pike plays Marla, a woman who seems to care for the elderly. However, the polarizing actions come when she starts stealing from them and using court-appointed guardian roles to take advantage.
11. Bella Swan
Bella is the main character of the Twilight movie, but despite that, she has received a lot of hate due to her indecisiveness and boring personality. Some say the biggest crime a character can commit is being boring, and Bella serves as a prime example.
12. Paris
While the Paris in the story had a lot going for him, the movie adaptation failed to capture any of this. With Orlando Bloom as the lead in 2004’s Troy, Paris comes across as cowardly and questionable.
13. Mr. Ewell
For a throwback, if you’ve seen To Kill a Mockingbird, Mr. Ewell is the character that wrongly accuses a man of a crime he didn’t commit. Likely motivated by racism and also just downright selfish, Mr. Ewell comes across as creepy and heartless.

14. Warden Norton
The Shawshank Redemption is considered one of the greatest films around, especially considering all the awards it’s won. While Warden Norton isn’t cruel or heartless, he is an egomaniac, and his ruthlessness and corruption is what makes him equally interesting as it does hateable.
15. Prince Charming
DreamWorks’ Shrek turned a lot of stereotypes on their heads, and one of them was the role of the prince and the monster. While Shrek showcased his heroism, Prince Charming, despite his name, showcased the dark side of perfectionism and entitlement.
16. Commodus
Gladiator is a fan-favorite movie for many, and hating on Commodus is probably one of the reasons it works so well. Joaquin Phoenix portrays this unhinged tyrant as cruel, creepy, and very entitled.
17. Jar Jar Binks
It’s pretty obvious why people dislike Jar Jar, as no character gets more annoying than him. Known for his clumsy antics and irritable voice, he may be memorable, but the movies might be more bearable without him.
18. Mr. Potter
In 1946’s It’s a Wonderful Life, Mr. Potter gets a lot of rightful hate as a greedy corporate bully. He showcases the cruelty that comes with capitalism and is eager to heavy his own pockets at the cost of others.
19. Lotso
Lotso is a great villain, and Toy Story 3 really pushed the boundaries of what people expected! That being said, Lotso shows how bitterness can affect the soul and turn people dark, and his cruelty and selfishness caused lots of toys trouble.
20. Percy Wetmore
In The Green Mile, Doug Hutchison plays everyone’s most hated prison guard, Percy Wetmore. This character comes across as slimy and cowardly as he torments people alike and blackmails others to keep some semblance of power.
