Glamour Gets Awkward
Red carpet interviews are supposed to be fun little moments where celebrities smile, mention the project, and keep moseying down the carpet. But live cameras have a way of turning one strange question into a clip people harp on for years. These five interviews prove just how uncomfortable a dazzling night can be.
1. Dakota Johnson and Melanie Griffith At The 2015 Oscars
Dakota Johnson’s 2015 Oscars interview with her mom, Melanie Griffith, became pretty heated when the conversation turned to Fifty Shades of Grey. Griffith admitted she hadn’t seen the film, saying it would feel strange to watch, while Johnson got visibly irritated. She then snapped while everyone tried to laugh it off.
2. Rashida Jones Explaining Her Ethnicity
At the 2015 SAG Awards, Rashida Jones was complimented on looking “tan” and “tropical,” which quickly sent the interview into a spiral. Jones responded calmly, “I’m ethnic,” and the moment immediately showed how a casual red carpet comment can land in flames.
3. Taylor Swift’s Grammy Night Dating Question
During a 2015 Grammys red carpet interview, Taylor Swift was told she might be going home with more than trophies, with the implication aimed at her personal life. Swift wasn’t shy about shutting it down by saying she would be going home to hang out with friends and cats. The response was funny, but the tension was obvious.
4. Scarlett Johansson’s Avengers Underwear Question
While promoting The Avengers, Scarlett Johansson was asked whether she wore underwear under her Black Widow costume. It was obviously invasive, and she pushed back sharply, pointing out how strange it was that she kept getting questions her male co-stars weren’t.
5. Mayim Bialik Correcting an Assumption
At the SAG Awards, Mayim Bialik was asked about people assuming she could solve calculus, all because she played a scientist on TV. Bialik calmly explained that she had actually trained in calculus and was a neuroscientist in real life. Way to shut them down.
